Animals of the Rainforest Program!

Nature's Niche will be bringing live animals of the rainforest to Door County!  These "Creature Teachers" range from bugs to mammals and everything in between; the rainforests are home to so many different kinds of animals!  You will get to see these great animals up close at four of the Library Branches:

Washington Island - Tuesday June 22nd 10:30am

Sister Bay/Liberty Grove - Tuesday June 22nd 3:00pm

Forestville - Wednesday June 23rd 3:00pm

Sturgeon Bay - Thursday June 24th 1:30pm

This is the big program that the Nicolet Library System brings us every summer, and animal programs are great fun, so bring the whole family out to see Nature's Niche's Creature Teachers!

National Library Week - Great Reads

Happy National Library Week (April 11th-17th)!  Our Honorary Chairman for this year, Wisconsin Author Neil Gaiman, has written some really great books for kids over the years; here are some of them.

He wrote The Graveyard Book, which won the Newbery award (excellence in writing for kids) last year.  He wrote Coraline which was then turned into a graphic novel and a movie, which we will be showing at the Sturgeon Bay Library on Thursday April 15th at 3pm. Odd and The Frost Giants hasn't been turned into anything yet, but it's still fun to read.

For younger kids he has written the picture books: The Dangerous Alphabet, Blueberry Girl, Crazy Hair, The Day I Swapped My Dad for Two Goldfish and Wolves in the Walls.

Better known in some circles for his books for teens and adults, Neil Gaiman's books for kids are just as great and well worth looking for.

Read Across America Week (Dr. Seuss' Birthday)

This week is Read Across America Week, where everyone gets together to support reading to children.  In addition, this week we celebrate Dr. Seuss's Birthday on March 2nd!  Pick up your favorite book by Theodor Seuss Geisel and read it to your favorite kid (or to yourself, if you haven't indulged yourself lately).

Party with Spot on Saturday January 30th

The annual costumed character program, this year called "Party With Spot!" will start at 12:30 this Saturday (January 30th) in the Sturgeon Bay Library.  Children between 2 and 6 are encouraged to bring their grownups and big kids to enjoy Eric Hill's stories about Spot, play fun games, make a peekaboo craft, and have a yummy cookie for a snack.  Spot the dog will be there to play games and give hugs, so bring your family camera to record the memories.

Eric Carle Performance at the Weidner Center

On Saturday January 23rd at 11am families will get a real treat when the Weidner Center for Performing Arts presents the puppet show The Very Hungry Caterpillar and other Eric Carle Favorites.  In November kids all across the county read books and added to the library Caterpillars as we celebrated the 40th anniversary of Eric Carle's The Very Hungry Caterpillar.  Some of those kids won tickets to the show, but with tickets priced at $8, many others will be going too.  This promises to be a great time for everyone who goes to see it.
