Mars Needs Moms!
Mars Needs Moms, a new film out this weekend from Disney, looks like it will be lots of fun action, but did you know it was based on a book? Yep, the picture book Mars Needs Moms came out in 2007! This book always makes me weepy, since it's all about love between a Mom and her child. The author is one of my favorite comic strip writers, Berkley Breathed. Mr. Breathed is probably best known for his Bloom County comics (although Opus the Penguin did get his own book - A Wish For Wings That Work.) At any rate, the movie is out March 11th 2011, and looks like it will be a good time. I will (probably) not weep when I watch it.
Narnia Returns to the Big Screen - The Voyage of the Dawn Treader

C.S. Lewis created a series of books for children in the early 1950s that are still popular today: The Chronicles of Narnia. Elementary aged kids have read these books for the first time for the last 60 years and loved the stories like they were new each time. Disney has started adapting the series, starting with The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, and continuing with Prince Caspian, and now The Voyage of the Dawn Treader will reach the big screen on December 10th 2010. These gorgeous films bring the stories to new audiences with great skill, but of course I will alway tell you to Read The Book too. No film can ever capture the whole story as it appears on the page, but these do a lovely job.
Rapunzel on the Big Screen? Disney's Tangled
Disney Studios has taken fairy tales to the big screen so many times that it is hardly a surprise that they are getting around to Rapunzel. In Tangled, they will be giving the Disney Twist to the old story of the girl in the tower. They are hardly the first ones to adapt the details of this story, as witnessed by the many versions in the Library. Tangled isn't out yet, so we really don't know how good it will be, but everything they are putting out so far indicates a feisty heroine and very substantial part for the rescuing prince; this last in a big effort to bring the boys in to see the "princess" movie. Take it how you will; it should be a fun time.
The Guardians Go to the Movies!
The Guardians of Ga'Hoole series by Kathryn Lasky is one of those great adventure stories for kids, so it was inevitable that it would be made into a film. Look for Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole to hit theaters on September 24th 2010.
How To Train Your Dragon
This super fun book by Cressida Cowell has now been turned into a thrill a minute animated movie by Dreamworks. The movie and the book are a little bit different, so before you see the movie, check out the book!
